Activity:

Poems Race

Level:

Primary

Short description:

This activity is a bit noisy but children love it. I know it is a mixture of reading and writing activity. In the corridor you have to hang poems with a number on each one. Then divide children in pairs one of them would be the writer and the other would be the speaker. Once everybody is ready a number is given to the speakers they have to look for the poem with this number on it and read and learn by heart as much as they can, then they have to come back to the class and dictate the words, sentences or the whole poem to his/her writer. Speaker can go to the corridor as many times as necessary. If the writer makes any spelling mistake the speaker can only spell the word. At the end of the lesson children read the poems aloud.
Variation: Instead of poems could be pieces of a story tale (or songs) they must reread once they have finished and put them in order.
Variation: For the next year we would like to do this activity with different kind of texts in order students can see some differences between a poem, a letter, a recipe...

Objectives:

-To make children enjoy while reading
.To be able to write down what they are reading.

Assessment:

I use to write some notes about their pronunciation during the game and also at the end of the lesson when they read the poems. After this I collect the poems to see what they have written.
