Activity: Making up your own story
Level: Secondary
Short description: Give the Ss a chart with different options in order to write a story. They will have to choose their characters, the places, actions, objects, etc.
Objectives: Stimulate Ss and help them see that writing can be fun. Improve their writing skillls too, of course.
Assessment: A writing rubrica, peer correction.

This is an activity that always work. I usually do it in pairs o groups of three and at the end they read it aloud and record it. Sometimes they make a MovieMaker video with them, but it depends on the course.

Hello, this is Lluís Miquel.

It seems a stimulating way to write a story. I take the view that it’s always useful to provide some kind of framework so that students don’t have to invent out of blue. The stories could also be posted on a blog or a wiki. I suppose the story goes through several stages of correction. E.g. students can correct their partner’s composition or try to spot any mistakes. The teacher can mark the mistakes s/he thinks their sts are likely to be able to correct. The teacher can correct a draft and sts work on that draft and try to improve and enhance it.

Hi, Maria Asunción, this is Núria.

I always focus on wh words when planning a narrative (who, when where, what, how and why), and your approach is a breath of fresh air to me. I think both combine quite well.

I try to find a WEB page (now I don't remember) where you can do the same but online.

Students always feel relieved when they are given some sort of help before facing a writing activity...and this is a good idea!!!

I like the worksheet you give to your students I think it is very useful. Marisa, I know the web you are talking about but I can't remember the name.
