Hi, this is Nuria, Interesting activity to make students understand how narratives work. It might help them to understand what you mean by appropriate vocabulary, grammar and spelling. I am not sure such an activity can be used to assess coherence, when the final outcome is a nonsense story.
Hello Marisa, this is Sònia. My students also have a lot of fun with this activity. The version I use is quite similar to the description that you have provided, with some variations. To start with, I give my students the beginning of the story, which they have to continue with their own ideas. Then, they have to pass the paper to their mates folding it but leaving the last sentence visible. This way, the outcome is still funny but there's some coherence which puts all the contributions together.
