Reading forum
Reading is a receptive skill - through it we receive information. It requires attention and strategies to decode and understand symbols (reading comprehension).
But the complex process of reading also requires the skill of speaking, so that we can pronounce the words that we read. In this sense, reading is also a productive skill in that we are both receiving information and transmitting it (even if only to ourselves). We must store and be able to retrieve what we read, too.
Reading skills are specific abilities which enable a reader

  • to decode symbols
  • to read anything written with independence, comprehension and fluency.
  • To mentally interact with the message.

Reading in English is like reading in your native language. This means that it is not always necessary to read and understand each and every word in English. Reading skills in your native language and English are basically the same.
How can we improve reading in the English classes?
